Eugene Onegin
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (01 January, 1991)
Authors: Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin and Vladimir Nabokov
Average review score:

Nabokov's Pushkin
Nabokov and Pushkin are among my favorite authors, both having an excellent command of the language, the media, and the art. But Nabokov's Pushkin is too literal to be any good. James Falen's trans. is far superior, perhaps the best, and it's worth while to read the very best Pushkin. Ironically, Nabokov was fretted that anyone other than his son would ever translate his words; I think Pushkin would have felt the same if he saw Nabokov's translation of his masterpiece. Falen, while also literal, also is metered and rhymes. Nabokov's thuds. Read Nabokov's great novels (Pnin, Lolita, King Queen & Knave, Bend Sinister, Invitation to a Beheading, Despair, etc.) but leave Pushkin to Falen, not Nabokov.

Never mention "literature" without reading this book!
I'm a Russian Language and Literature major in Yonsei Univ. in Korea. Having lived in Moscow for around 3 years, I'd heard there a lot about Pushkin and read many of his famous works. The most prestigious of his, however, must be "Onegin." It's a great mixture of verse and prose in its form. If possible, try to read this in Russian, as well. This long poetical prose was written for 8 years and the ending rhyme perfectly matches for the entire line until the very end. Compared to others, it is definitely a conspicuous and brilliant one. "Onegin" can be the author himself or yourself. The love between Onegin and TaTyana is neither the cheap kind of love that often appears in any books nor the tragic one that is intended to squeze your tears. As a literature, this book covers not only love between passionate youth, but also a large range of literary works in it, which can tell us about the contemporary literature current and its atmosphere. Calling Onegin "My friend", Pushkin, the author, shows the probability and likelihood of the work. Finally, I'm just sorry that the title has been changed into English. The original name must be "Yevgeni Onegin(¬¦¬Ó¬Ô¬Ö¬ß¬Ú¬Û ¬°¬ß¬Ö¬Ô¬Ú¬ß)." If you are a literature major or intersted in it, I'd like to recommand you read this. You can't help but loving the two lovers and may reread it, especially the two correspondences through a long period of time. Only with readng this book, you'll also learn a huge area of the contemporary literature of the 19th century from the books mentioned in "Onegin" that take part as its subtext. Enjoy yourself!

Pushkin FOREVER!!! The best Russian poet in his best.
I'm so happy that I'm Russian and I could read this masterpiece in original language. This is one of the best Russian books ever written, and it is the example of all-time classics. Evgeniy Onegin is so extremely well-written, so original, so interesting, so intelligent. If you want to understand Russian people, you should live in Russia for years. But if you want just to approach to understanding them read some Russian literature. Your first authors may be Tolstoy or Dostoyevskiy, but I should recommend reading Pushkin at first because he is the most Russian of all Russian writers.

The only thing that may make your reading not so great is the fact that you will read it in translation. I have never read any but I think that if you like (or dislike) one of them you should try some others.

I know that Nabokov didn't translate it using the verses (and Pushkin's verses are so great), but I think it is the most punctual one. So maybe you should try to read exactly it (especially if you have already read some not so punctual translation but in verse form).

Anyway Evgeniy Onegin is one of the greatest books ever written!!!

The Homiletical Plot: The Sermon As Narrative Art Form
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (November, 1980)
Authors: Eugene L. Qowry and Eugene Lowry
Average review score:

A Guide to the Art of Preaching in Story
Story telling is an art and preachers thouroughout history have tried to use this for effectiveness in preaching. Eugene Lowry presents different methods of story telling and the one he describes in section two of the book is an excellent and delightful way of achieving this end. This artistically presented work would enlighten any reader interested in preaching and would inform and instruct even the seasoned preacher of our day.

It has been a guidebook for my own preaching and study of the art of preaching.

Xavier Thelakkatt

A Must Read for the Serious Preacher
This book is for anyone who is serious about preaching; even if you have been preaching for a while! For the new preacher, Lowry explains how to make your sermons interesting, Biblical, relevent, specific and memorable! For the seasoned preacher he illuminates several ideas that you may already be aware of subconciously by using in depth analysis of the five parts of "the sermon as preached" and by giving excelent examples and analogies. Even if you do not adopt his specific format this book enables you to make your style more effective and crisper. This book should be in every preacher's library!

Excellent & concise 'how-to' book on narrative preaching.
Lowry's book is the best I have read on narrative preaching. He is easy to read and his suggested homiletical plot is remarkably simple and yeteasy to apply to all kinds of texts, regardless of their genre. A narrative sermon - as Lowry has made clear - does not have to be preached from a narrative passage of Scripture. Another excellent point he makes (which needs to be heard by today's preachers) is that the sermon ought NOT be constructed like an essay, which is pieced together one point upon another. No, a sermon is an event which HAPPENS. Therefore the congregation needs to hear and experience the sermon in such a way that it transforms their thinking because they have had an experience which leads them to greater faith in Christ. In teaching homiletics courses in the future, I will certainly make use of this book as a required text!

In My Brother's Image: Twin Brothers Separated by Faith After the Holocaust
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (02 October, 2001)
Author: Eugene Pogany
Average review score:

A compelling book indeed
As the child of parents who came from the strictly Orthodox Jewish community of Hungary, and as one raised within that Orthodoxy, albeit transplanted to America, this book exposed me to a portion of Hungarian Jewish history I never really knew. This book speaks of the tragedy of so many Hungarian Jews. Jews who were totally estranged from their ancestral faith, who had no attachment to their heritage. For those people, Judaism was an undesirabe yoke to be cast aside or at best ignored. This book tells the reader however that one cannot truly escape his true identity. The true hero of the book, the author's father, discovers this in the hell of Bergen-Belsen. His uncle, the priest, spends the war in relative safety, but always in fear that he would be denounced. That uncle also has to contend with the very real possiblity that his Hungarian coreligionists "allowed" him to escape to Italy into the warm embrace of Padre Pio and the Capuchin monks not out of dedication to him in the spirit of Christian fellowship, but rather out of a desire to be rid of another Jew.
The emotions that pervade this book are powerful. The characters are real. The dialogue, while made up, displays the pathos of the characters and speaks to the reader's soul.
This book is about many things: religion, families and their dysfunctions, theodicy, Catholic-Jewish relations, and overding all of those, this book is about the complexity of life. Like all great works, the message of this book will be shaped by the reader and his/her weltanschaung.

GOOD AS OPPOSED TO GREAT
I hate to disagree with 3 5-star evaluations, but I thought the story was insightful and interesting but I did not find the reading process as easy as another critique stated. If the book was decrased by about 50 pages, I believe it would be even more compelling than it is.

I have read a number of holocaust books and this family did not have it as bad as others, but I assure you all of them were near death except the Catholic Father.

I particularly liked the beginning and end when the author was talking in the first person. A fine read.

Insightful, very well written family portrait
A very thoughtful and sensitive family story. Very insightful. It helped me to understand my own parents better. It is very well written, easy to read and I couldn't put it down.

Mallory: Complete Works
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (September, 1977)
Authors: Thomas, Sir Malory and Eugene Vinaver
Average review score:

The Original
This is a marvelous work. You must teach yourself to read the 15th-century English, but once you have gotten the knack, it's not hard at all. Malory lived in a simpler time, and spoke a simpler language, than we do today. There is a vigor and energy to the prose that leaps off the page - I remember one knight threatening that he would "fetch [his enemy] out of the biggest castle that he had." This volume, which gathers Malory's work over many many years, also tells the story of a man learning how to be a writer, and also, I think, growing in his emotional understanding and inteterest in his own characters. The characters are so much more real and interesting at the end than at the beginning!

The best version of Le Mort D' Arthur ever!!!!
If you want the original Middle English version of Le Mort D' Arthur, this is it. It is the Winchester version. I bought this book while in England and it's the best version I have due to the original spellings. It's a challenge to read, but I enjoy it because it is more authentic. Since you don't have somebody "correcting" the text, you get to see what the original actually looks and reads like. I believe this is the only middle English version available. You won't be disappointed!

The Only Way To Read Arthur
For those of us who want to read the original tales of King Arthur and the Round Table, but can't speak French, this is the place to go. The 15th century English makes for slow going at first, but provides a more authentic tale than the Caxton version. Malory grows stylistically throughout the Works, and by the Morte D'Arthur he tells as engaging a tale as any in Arthurian literature. This is a must read!

This book is a necessity to all PM collectors. It is a bit pricey but is well worth the cost. This book provides excellent pictures of figurines as well as a alphabetized and numerical index that can be used to locate the specific figurine.

Answering God: The Psalms as Tools for Prayer
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (May, 1991)
Author: Eugene H. Peterson
Average review score:

You'll never read the paslams the same again
Peterson delves into the literary components of the Psalms to bring out the passion and the purpose of the Psalms in community and individual life. His love for Psalms and the reality of its content further illuminates the power behind the emotion, the praise, and the faith of Israel's musicians and priests. Peterson writes with such a great command of language (both English and Hebrew) that his writing can leave you wondering if you caught what he is saying. It reminded me of reading a CS Lewis book. I always feel like I'm missing the nuances of what he is saying but am awed at how he puts it into words.

This is a tremendous book if you want to begin to read the Psalms with the passion of King David and want to infuse your spiritual life with a more complete understanding of who God is and how we communicate with Him.

open the door...
I have to agree with the reviewer of August 7, 2001's enthusiasm for this book. I first read "Answering God: The Psalms As Tools for Prayer" when I checked it out of a local library. The book so moved and changed me that I had to stop midway, turn the book back in at the library, and order a copy.

"Answering God" is the kind of book that helps the reader open doors that have always be locked to them. In my case, it has revolutionized the way I pray while giving the Psalms greater meaning to me.

It is a small book of great depth. It looks at the Psalms--warts and all. It digs deep into the topics it discusses. It looks at the basic questions of what a Psalm consists of. It then teaches what prayer is and how it affects those who pray. It follows this by teaching the reader how to pray the Psalms.

This book is full of practical advice and direction. Eugene Peterson is the perfect person to write this book. He is an expert in the field of prayer...not because of any degree he holds but because he is a deep person of prayer (this will be crystal clear to anyone who reads the book). Peterson is a trusted guide for the sometimes unforgiving terrain of the Psalms.

I give "Answering God" my most heartfelt recommendation. I urge you to get a copy today.

New Insights on Prayer and the Psalms
I just placed an order for six more copies of this book to give to friends and family ... and that's only a start. Am I new to the Bible? Not hardly. I'm one of those "veteran" Christians who has been active in church and other ministries all my life. Even so, "Answering God" introduced me to the Psalms in a way I've never before experienced. I'm excited about using the Psalms to help me develop a deeper, richer prayer life. As Peterson writes: "Prayers are tools for being and becoming ... The Psalms come from a people who hear God speak to them and realize that it is the most important word they will ever hear spoken. They decide to respond." So have I.

Harrison's CD-ROM, 14/e

A HIGH QUALITY E-BOOK DENTED BY USE-RESTRICTIONS
HARRISON'S is synonymous with clinical books that worth their weights in gold. This 15th/ed CD-ROM maintained that tradition. It adds the much-needed portability to some 2700-paged heavyweight. However, the air-tight use-restrictions attached to the ...price is simply suffocating. I wish that the publisher had relaxed a bit!
Overall though, there were compensations. The CD contents are superb: far better than what the textbook versions offer. Anyone with interest in medical science should give it a try. It is elaborate and easy to understand. The excellent chapters on pharmacology and infectious diseases are particularly worth mentioning.

It's wonderful book. Keep it up.
I have been reading Harrison's Medicine right from my residency. Its a fabulous book one can refer to as an undergraduate or postgratuate student. However for a practitioner one would prefer to have little more stress on management details. Adding audio to CD of the same book will make it more useful.

The Middle Game in Chess
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1980)
Authors: Eugene Aleksandrovich Znosko-Borovsky, Evg A. Znosko-Borovskii, and J. Du Mont
Average review score:

Not The Best But Good Enough
At times the author wrote as if he was writing a novel instead of a chess book, but it is still a good book. There are some problems with it though. I can't stand Descriptive Notation (1.P-K4 P-K4, 2.N-KB3 N-QB3, etc.). He also assumes way too much out of the reader. Such as, after showing an even position he states a line of moves and ends with,"And White is clearly better and wins". What truly makes it irritating is when I put the position on Fritz and let the computer play it out it draws everytime. So where is the clear win? The way Znosko breaks down chess into the three elements (Time, Space, & Force) is awesome. I wish Jeremy Silman would have done it this way in his book Reassess Your Chess. But if both books are purchased and studied I believe the reader will come out ahead. Overall, a good book, not the best, but good. Definitely worth the cover price at least.

Great Book!!!
This books shows that great chess learning need not cost a fortune. Very similar to the teaching approach of Reuben Fine's Ideas Behind the Chess Opening. With few examples, but very thorough in practical and effective positional ideas of middle game play. This may not be the most interesting book for future Tals or the Fischers (attacking players) of chess but great for the Petrosians and the Karpovs (positional players).

Wide scope
A nice book with a wide scope. Definetly a book not suited to the beginner.

Plagiarism and The Culture War : The Writings of Martin Luther King, Jr, and Other Prominent Americans
Published in Paperback by Hallberg Pub Corp (May, 1998)
Authors: Theodore Pappas, Theodore Pappas, Jacob Neusner, and Eugene D. Genovese
Average review score:

Great research, poor structure
Pappas' reasearch is very engaging. Yes King did steal his most famous essays and speechs and back his theory up with hard facts.

On reviewer on this cite insisted that King's doctoral thesis reads similar to Jack Boozer's but does not rise to plagiarism. As Pappas points out, when Boozer cites a quote from Tillich he mis-cites page 282 istead of page 252. An honest mistake. But King aslo cites page 282 rather than 252. Clearly the two did not mis-cite the quote by mere coincidence.

Pappas' only problem is that he does not use this book to break down King in whole. I'm still amazed that King and Jesus are the only two people honored with national holidays.

I too was brought up to admire King. However after researching his life I find nothing about it worth celebrating. In fact I find him as being the source of many of our race problems today. The book should have focused on debunking King in whole.

...

Just the facts, ma'am: modern plagiarism anatomized
The great thing about Theodore Pappas' account is its transparent fair-mindedness. Pappas is interested solely in the ramifications of intellectual corruption; he isn't an apparatchik at all. Thus, his scrupulously documented account of MLK's (and other late-twentieth-century demigods') mania for literary theft can't be accused of ideological axe-grinding. He sets out the facts in the most sober manner possible. Moreover, his style is clear, trenchant and unassuming all at once.

Sobering
Theodore Pappas' book is a devastating look at the state of academia and "scholarship." The treatment of MLK, Jr's dissertation is especially troubling.

Pocket Guide to Radiography
Published in Paperback by Year Book Medical Pub (June, 1999)
Authors: Philip W. Ballinger and Eugene D. Frank
Average review score:

too big for the pocket
I found this book to not be a good value as it is too large to easily fit in a pocket. My program had us buy it as a required book. Book would be improved by making it smaller. Also please put in pictures of finished radiographs and technique suggestions. (Showing suggested side marker placement and showing 2 or three views together on a single image receptor when this is customary would be useful too.) I gave up on trying to carry this thing and wrote my own little book to carry. So did the other students at my hospital.

HANDY REFERENCE
The newest edition of this Pocket Guide is a great improvement over the previous edition. The alert to projections that may need adjustment for computed radiography is a timely addition. The write-in techniques section is excellent, especially for AEC techniques. We also like the added mobile projections although only 10 of the most common are described. This handy fit-in-the pocket guide is wonderful for students to carry around and reference. The discussion is very brief, however the students have already had detailed study from the main Merrill's textbook. No radiographs are included, however, they have already seen these in their main textbook and in lab. The most important addition, a very well done photo of the patient in postion, is all that most students and radiographers refer to once they have mastered the projections. Although a radiograph would be nice, we are glad the authors have not cluttered the pages with unnecessary data and have kept the Guide relatively small. This is by far the best Pocket Guide on the market. Thanks for a very well done and practical Guide for our students.

GREAT POCKET GUIDE
This is a great pocket guide for radiography students. The new techniques section, especially the AEC area, is well designed to include any portion of any exposure technique. Not only do our students depend on this for their daily techniques in the clinical areas, we use it for our lab sessions and the students augment the printed matter with notes of their own. This is the best tool the student has when they leave our program and begin work elsewhere. This pocket guide is very comprehensive and fits nicely into a pocket. My faculty depend on this guide when they moonlight at various jobs around our locale. No radiography student should be without this very well designed tool.
